Occasionally the CRA will notify individuals of a request for further information or documentation in reference to their tax return, clarifying income figures or deductions. This is nothing to be concerned about, as long as you have been accurate and honest in your submissions. We would like to take the opportunity to confirm for our clients that contact from CRA is not necessarily a cause for concern, and that we are happy to assist you in providing what’s needed for a quick completion of the inquiry process.
It’s also important to understand that being contacted by CRA is not an indication that they feel you or your accounting firm has does anything to warrant the inquiry. It is often a random sampling to ensure correct procedures are being followed. The cause could also be that there are unusual changes in your return compared to previous years, such as making a much larger contribution to your RRSP or to charities, or having significantly greater medical or childcare costs this year than previous years.
